Description

Today, it is estimated that every 1 in 5 American children aged 3-12 is struggling with obesity, often a form of malnutrition (CDC, 2017). The pervasive consequences of this epidemic include increased risk for the child to develop other chronic diseases, such as asthma, bone, and joint problems, sleep apnea, risk factors for heart disease, and diabetes (CDC, 2017). The mission of Real Kids Real Food & Eat to Thrive is to prevent obesity, chronic disease, and malnutrition through the education and advocacy of healthy living.

Real Kids Real Food, Inc. (RKRF) was founded as a non-profit 501(c)3. Previously, it was known as Phat Free Nation in 2005, and Optimum Health Solution in 2008. From its conception RKRF has been committed to providing health education, training, and hands-on nutritional engagement [1] with the mission of preventing obesity, chronic disease, and malnutrition, especially in children, through education and advocacy of healthy living. Children at the highest risk of obesity and diabetes are educated using an integrative effective [2] approach in healthy living. The program broadens their exposure to making healthy choices with attention to affordability and incorporates physical activities and parent involvement. RKRF and Eat To Thrive, its 10-week adult program that funds RKRF and trains both parents and staff in the same way have been successfully offered in Somerville, including in low-cost housing; Boston; Eddystone, PA public school; Boys and Girls club[3] ; Vida Real (Spanish)[4]  church; and globally virtually in Belgium; Canada; and throughout the United States.  Hands-on activities concerning nutrition, local and organic food, kitchen gardening, preparing meals, fitness, and mindfulness activities, both children and adults learn how to achieve and continue an overall healthy lifestyle. RKRF has developed a replicable curriculum.
