Description:
Today, it is estimated that every 1 in 5 American children aged 3-14 is struggling with obesity, often a form of malnutrition (CDC, 2017). The pervasive consequences of this epidemic include increased risk for the child to develop other chronic diseases, such as asthma, bone, and joint problems, sleep apnea, risk factors for heart disease, and diabetes (CDC, 2017).
RKRF, a non-profit 501(c)3 founded in 2005, manifests its mission of preventing obesity, chronic disease, and malnutrition through education and advocacy of healthy living through two separate ten-week programs: RKRF for children 3 – 14 and Eat to Thrive (ETT) for adults offered three times annually. They learn how to make affordable, healthy lifestyle choices through hands-on, fun activities: nutritional education, kitchen gardening, preparing plant-based meals, fitness, and mindfulness. RKRF provides free recipe ingredients for all food-insecure children.
The program initially focused on providing health services to underserved, low-income children and their families living in public housing and institutions within inner-city areas. However, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, it transitioned from in-person to virtual delivery until the summer of 2023. Currently, both programs have adopted a hybrid approach, including virtual and in-person. This shift has allowed the programs to expand their global reach beyond their original target population. ETT generates revenue by means of tuition fees, while it is provided at no cost to parents affiliated with the RKRF program. The organization known as RKRF was honored with the Humanitarian Service award in recognition of their efforts to enhance the well-being of children in many settings, including elementary schools, low-cost housing communities, the Boys and Girls Club, and Vida Real, a program catering to the Spanish-speaking population. www.realkidsrealfood.org
