Real Kids Real Food Age 7-12 Club 2021 Counselor

Hello! My name is Raina and I am a senior at Boston University. I am deeply interested in creating a healthy and mindful lifestyle for myself and I am passionate about working with others to do the same. I believe that a balanced diet and active lifestyle can be achieved by anyone. Cooking is peaceful for me, and I love trying new recipes. I especially enjoy South Asian cuisine because they are filled with aromatic spices and delicious vegetarian recipes! In my spare time, I love to garden and spend time with my youngest siblings. I am looking forward to working with the program!

Testimonial:

I worked with Real Kids Real Food/Eat to Thrive during the winter of 2021 and it has been a wonderful experience. My main responsibility was to serve as a counselor for the virtual Real Kids Real Food 7-12 club and assist on the administrative side for the virtual Eat to Thrive program. I worked very closely with a team of interns and our supervisor, Betsy Bragg, to prepare and execute both programs.

Being a counselor for Real Kids Real Food was rewarding. I developed lesson plans for the 7-12 age club with my co-counselor on a weekly basis. There was a lot of brainstorming and organizing activities online to make it an enjoyable summer camp. Along with preparing the lesson plans, we had to send out food orders to the children who were food insecure so that they could participate in the recipe presentation. Working with the children was the best part of the position because they were so energetic and friendly. Together we played games, had discussions about nutrition and healthy living, and present food demonstrations. The kids are very enthusiastic about what the program has to offer and you must be comfortable communicating with children and their families regularly.

I also gained other skills during my time with these programs. For Eat to Thrive, I gained a ton of knowledge on the raw vegan diet and how it supplements the body. I worked closely with Betsy Bragg to prepare the presentation for the group and technically assist during the meeting. I took on many administrative tasks for both programs, such as developing and sending newsletters, contacting speakers for the presentation, and leading break out room discussions.

Overall, I have developed skills that will be helpful moving forward. I highly recommend taking this opportunity to anyone considering. Betsy was incredibly supportive during my time and cares about the success of Real Kids Real Food/Eat to Thrive. Her, along with our wonderful team, made this experience very memorable. I value how far Real Kids Real Food/Eat to Thrive has come, and this experience has helped me grow as person.
